Wellness Tip of the Month - Digital Wellness

In a digital age that’s developing at lightning speed, it can feel overwhelming and even impossible to keep up. Although social media and search engines have had a positive impact on student learning and connection, there is also a flip side with possible ramifications such as depression, social anxiety, and
cyberbullying.

Unfortunately, that initial response to shield your child from potential harm is not an effective long-term solution in this case. Rather than be fearful, how can we help our children navigate this complex, ever-evolving, world of technology while upholding Christ’s commandment in training our children to, “... Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37)?

Here are 6 simple ideas:

1. Have consistent limits for screen time.
2. Facilitate open conversations about media. Be explicit with your child about
what is safe or unsafe to disclose online and allow them to ask “why?”.
3. Familiarize yourself with the apps your child wants to use.
4. Have a designated space for media use to promote accountability
5. Model digital wellness/responsibility yourself (ex. Put your electronics in a
specific location before bed, spend more face-to-face time with your kids, put
    your phone away at meals).
6. Pray continually!
