Black History Month
February was Black History Month. The month-long observance in the US and Canada is a chance to celebrate Black achievement and learn from the lived experiences of Black people, past and present.
Our Grade 9 students were introduced to Black History Month by watching, Martin Luther King Jr. "I Have a Dream" speech and the movie "Selma". Afterwards, they were challenged to learn more about significant people and events that have shaped our society. The result was a timeline of civil rights and poetry dating back to the 1920's. Studying the past helps shape perspectives and challenge the status quo. Please take the time to view this informative presentation: click here.
One of our Grade 8 students wrote an excellent essay, "Is This What Life Comes To?" expressing Black history from a personal perspective. Click here to read his essay.
